What is a Salon?

An Italian invention of the 16th century, Salons are theatres of conversation and exchange, and historically refer to gatherings of people curated by an inspiring host (very often women), designed with the intention "either to please or to educate" (Latin: aut delectare aut prodesse - after Horace’s definition of poetry).

The word “Salon” first appeared in France in 1664 (from the Italian word salone, itself from sala, the large reception hall of Italian mansions), and these gatherings flourished in France throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and in Italy throughout the 19th century.

Some historians have argued that salons played a critical role in the emergence of the public sphere, emerging in cultural-political contrast to court society. Today they provide an intimate, generative space within which to explore the complex questions and challenges of our time.

The Flourishing Futures Salon was born from the themes, questions and challenges explored on the podcast, Nathalie Nahai In Conversation, and the proceeds from this project go towards keeping the podcast free and accessible to all.
